Travel

Tottenham Court Road (Elizabeth Line/Crossrail), Oxford Circus, Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus underground stations all within easy walking distance. It could not be better placed. In addition numerous bus routes and cycle highways are on the doorstep too.

Brief History of 14 Soho Square, London W1

14 Soho Square, one of the original buildings in the square (along with nos. 10 and 15) was once the home to Mary Seacole Blue (1805-1881), a black Jamaican nurse and heroine of the Crimean War. The building has in her honour, been awarded a blue plaque, having been her main residence. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/blue-plaques/mary-seacole/ - an amazing woman.

For a period of about 60 years from circa 1870, Nicole, Nielsen & Co. manufactured some of the finest and most complicated English watches ever made in this very building. It remained at 14 Soho Square until it finally closed in 1934. The company made movements or watches. The equal to Rolex, of its day.

In the mid 1990's the ownership of the freehold changed and to the present day is owned by Red Bull Racing, for we are extremely proud to be acting, jointly with our esteemed friends at Noble Harris. This was Red Bull Racings own London HQ, for many years. As such with such a veritable history of occupiers - we look forward to meting he next!

Soho Square’s garden offers a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding streets. It was created when the square was first developed, and early residents paid ten shillings a year towards its upkeep. The unusual timbered structure in the centre was built in 1925 to hide the electricity sub-station installed beneath. It is now used as a store for the gardeners’ tools. Behind it is a statue of King Charles II which had been put into the square when it was first developed, though it was later removed due to its poor condition. It was restored (to the best of the restorer’s ability) and put back here in 1938.

The square was developed around 1680. Initially it was a very fashionable place to live, and a description written in 1720 said the square “hath very good buildings on all sides, which are well inhabited by Nobility and Gentry”. Fashionable squares such as this were built with piped water, sewerage and paved streets, all of which added to their attraction in a city in which these things were exceedingly rare. Soho’s cosmopolitan character is reflected in the square’s two churches. The French Protestant Church is a reminder of the time when nearly half of Soho’s population was Huguenot, while St Patrick’s has served the area’s Irish and Italian Catholic communities.
